Intrusion Detection: A Serious Business

If there's a bright side to the "LovSan" or "Blaster" Internet worm that rampaged through hundreds of thousands of computer systems last year, it's that the attack might lead home computer users and companies to look more closely at their security precautions.

Where as Microsoft® is always the company we love to hate for crucial flaws in their Windows operating system that allows hackers to gain access to your computer. The fact is the experts had known about this flaw and Microsoft had released a patch for it July 16 2003 and made it available on the Windows update site. If you had updated you computer with this fix you would not have been vulnerable to this worm.

You as a computer user can be proactive in fighting the spread of this kind of threat by 1: keeping your system up to date 2: Using a firewall 3: installing good virus protection and updating it weekly.

In Windows you can set your system to use the "automatic updates" feature that way you will receive all the critical updates that Microsoft has released for your computer.

Zone Alarm®; Norton®; McAfee® are some of the well known companies that sell firewall programs. They are fairly easy to set up and protect your computer from unwanted intrusions.

Virus protection is one of the most important defenses against intrusions of your computer. Trend Micro®; McAfee® and Norton® are three of the better known programs for virus protection and removal. They all feature real time scanning and automatic updating.

We as computer users have to become more proactive in fighting these threats and in implementing these three steps we can help stop the intrusions into our computers.
