                     Wireless Networking

Wireless networking technologies take the concept of "no new wires" one step further. In a wireless network, all of the computers in your home broadcast their information to one another using radio signals. This can make networking extremely easy, especially if you have computers all over your house. It also makes it a whole lot simpler to move computers around. For example, a laptop with a wireless network card is completely portable throughout the house.

While my office at work is fully wired, my home is not. Rather than mess up my walls pulling cables, I decided to use wireless. A type of wireless system that is the most popular is called 802.11b or Wi-Fi. It runs up to 11Mb/second, about as fast as a normal 10BaseT LAN and is becoming a standard of choice all over the place in business, education, and the home.

802.11 sounds like a very techie term, but it isn't. It's just the name of a particular specification for wireless networking from a group that likes to use numbers for names, the IEEE Standards Association. "802.11" is Wireless LAN.

Two of the new standards 802.11a and 802.11g are up to 5 xs faster. Both run at 54Mb/second. Giving your computers faster data transfer rate on your network. Real helpful if you are streaming video or music on your home network.

The standards 802.11b and 802.11g are compatible on the same network. Working on the 2.4GHz band. With a range of about 100-150Ft. Because they operate on the same frequency as some cordless phones conflicts may occur. Good planning setting up your wireless network with help control this problem.

802.11a on the other hand operates on the 5GHz band letting it coexist with 2.4GHz networks without interference. The drawback of this standard is its shorter range. Typically only 25 to 75 Ft. and its new technology not very popularity at this time. Also compared to the other standards it is relatively more expensive.
